Different locals use different terms to describe the same material.
To help avoid confusion here are some of our most often used descriptions:

Bedface
Stone finish - the horizontal quarry face exposed to elements - part you walk on in the quarry.

Bluestone
Slate material, typically quarried on the East Coast. Colors range from Blue Select (just blue tones) to Full Color (blues, greens, ochres, yellows) to Lilac (burgundy-violet). Material mainly sold dimensionally; irregular is available in full color. Material may be Thermal treated or natural cleft.

Bullnose or Bullnosing
A finishing treatment for the edge of materials - it can be either half - a rounding of the top edge or full - a rounding of the entire edge - top & bottom.

Clay Pavers
Made from clay and kiln fired.

Concrete Pavers
Paver made from dampened aggregate and cement, formed in molds and cured to allow cement to harden.

Cut Drywall
Stone 'snapped' or cut to specific widths (typically 8"); sorted to average thickness; in random lengths. Generally used for Gravity or Seat Walls (typically up to 24" tall).

Dimensional Stone
Natural stone either saw cut or snapped to specific size and / or thickness.

Flagstone
Irregular shaped; relatively flat natural cleft, typically 1-4" thick; over 18-24" in size.

Geogrid
Material used to reinforce retaining walls; typically unidirectional (must be laid in one direction), and engineered - refer to engineering specs for installation specifications.

Gravity Wall
Un-reinforced wall installed without the use of mortar, glue or geogrid; typically up to 4' in height.

Hearth Stone
Used for fireplaces, the stone in front of the fire box.

Ledgestone
Outcropping stone that looks somewhat like a flattened boulder.

Mantel
Used for fireplaces, stone above the fire box.

Natural Cleft
Naturally occurring stone finish - as it emerges from the quarry.

Outcropping Stone
Large, relatively flat, irregularly shaped chunks of stone that can be used for steps, water features, walls or accents. General sizing can be requested when ordering, but being a natural product, there is a lot of variation.

Pavers
Similar to 'bricks' but used as a pavement material for walks, drives or patios. Usually solid with spacers on the sides to allow for drainage.

Permeable Pavers
Pavers designed to allow water to drain through instead of flow over. They are used in a Permeable system - your base is almost more important than the paver. Becoming more popular to help with water flow and control issues on property.

Random Outcropping Steps
Natural stone SORTED to a size useful as a natural step. Variation is normal - irregular shape and thickness - EVEN in the same step. Material CANNOT be guaranteed to fall within specific guidelines. Use dimensionally sized steps if exact sizing is required.

Retaining Wall
Wall used to (typically) hold soil in place. Engineering plan may be required for safety - especially above 4' in height. Most are stepped back - higher layers are recessed further into soil than lower.

Rockfacing
A finishing treatment for the edge of stone materials - a way to make a sawn face edge look snapped or as if chiseled from the ground.

Seat Wall
Wall typically 18" to 24" in height, designed to be used for seating.

Steppers
Irregular shaped; relatively flat natural cleft, typically 1-3" thick; 8-18" in size.

Thermal Treated
Heat treatment of stone - gives a fuzzy finish.

Treads
Similar to steps - but typically used to cap or cover a concrete step. Typical thickness is either 1.5" or 2".

Veneer
  1. Stone used to 'face' or cover something. Full veneer is sold by the ton, typically 4"+ deep, and type determines other dimensions. Thin Veneer is sawn or snapped thinner - typically 1 to 3" deep. Thin is sold by the box, confirm square foot coverage per box. Corner pieces also available in Thin veneer.

Veneer Paver
thin - typically 1 1/2" thick paver, that may be applied on top of concrete.

Wetcast Pavers
Concrete pavers that are manufactured by wetting materials to a slurry and then poured into molds - more water is used in production.
