Different types of Salt:
Sodium Chloride / Mined and Solar -
The most popular for De-Icing.
Lowest effective temperature is 5 degrees above Zero.
Near or below this point the salt will not work and well below this temperature,
it will more than likely freeze up.
All mined rock salt is not pure. It contains other minerals and impurities from
when the deposit was laid down long ago. These impurities will
alter the color of the rock salt and may cause it to form smaller or larger
grains/crystals. The impurities allow mined rock salt to have a better residual
effect. Depending on the mineral composition around the salt, it can be yellow,
pink, red, purple, brown, and clear.
Solar salt is evaporated sea water. Solar salt is significantly more pure than
mined rock salt as there are much fewer impurities in the salt. It works faster
but has less residual effect. The color is always clear/white.
Magnesium Chloride -
Effective to –25 degrees Below Zero.
Safer for turf.
Safer for concrete .
Calcium Chloride -
Effective to –25 degrees Below Zero.
Safer for concrete.
Often used as a concrete additive.
Potassium Chloride -
Effective to 10 degrees above zero.
Safest for plants.
Is a major component in fertilizer.
Moisture - and how it affects salt:
Salt is hydroscopic.
All salt products contain moisture.
Salt will adsorb moisture out of the air.
It is imperative that salt is kept covered and protected from moisture.
Anything you can do to keep rain or snow from pooling on top of
pallets or a pile is effort well spent. When the temperature drops below
the effective of range of the salt it can and will freeze. The fact that it is
frozen does not mean the salt is bad it is just too cold and won't melt Ice.
Once the temperature rises into the working range of the salt it will unfreeze
and be-able to melt ice.
De-Icings salts are not for human consumption -
All chloride salts are corrosive.
Always rinse equipment when done to extend equipment life.
Wear gloves and eye protection when handling.
Do not ingest. Do not inhale dust.
